Mario Romero joins Digital Futures as Associate Director of Seminars and Workshops

On May 24, 2024, Mario Romero stepped into the role of Associate Director of Seminars and Workshops and joined the Executive Committee of Digital Futures.

Mario brings extensive experience to his new role. As an associate professor in Visualization at the Department of Computational Science and Technology (CST) within the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) at KTH, Mario has deep expertise in his field. His involvement with the Swedish Research Council’s (Vetenskapsrådet) National Research Infrastructure in Visualization InfraVis, where he serves as the national technical manager and local node coordinator, underscores his contributions to the visualization research community.

An accomplished academic, Mario is a Fulbright Scholar from Ecuador, earning his PhD in Computer Science from Georgia Tech in 2009 and a Master’s in Computer Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2001. His academic foundation was laid at Universidad San Francisco de Quito, where he graduated with dual bachelor’s degrees in Industrial Engineering and Construction Engineering in 1996.

Mario’s innovative spirit is evident through his entrepreneurial endeavours. He is the technical co-founder of BrailleTouch, an innovative smartphone keyboard designed for blind users, and Anymaker, a tablet application that facilitates 3D sketching. These ventures highlight his commitment to creating accessible technology solutions that cater to diverse user needs.

His research interests are broad and impactful, spanning Human-Computer Interaction with a particular focus on Mixed Realities (Virtual and Augmented Reality), Information Visualization, and Ubiquitous and Accessible Computing. Through his work, Mario seeks to bridge the gap between complex computational technologies and user-friendly applications that enhance everyday experiences.

As the new Associate Director of Seminars and Workshops at Digital Futures, Mario’s extensive knowledge and innovative mindset will continue to drive the program’s success.
