ECC24 kicks off in Stockholm with over 1100 enthusiastic participants and sunshine
Stockholm showcased its best with blue skies and sunshine as more than 1100 participants gathered for the European Control Conference (ECC24) opening session on Wednesday, 26 June.
Anders Rantzer, General Co-Chair of ECC24, warmly welcomed the audience and introduced the first opening session speaker, Mats Persson, Minister for Education, Government of Sweden. The minister emphasized the government’s strong commitment to research and development, highlighting the importance of such investments for competitiveness.

Dongil Cho, President of the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC), spoke about IFAC’s role in fostering technical discussions and global collaboration among diverse researchers.
M. Elena Valcher, President of the European Control Association, recalled her first participation at a European Control Conference in 1999; little did she know she would one day become the EUCA president.
Karl Henrik Johansson, General Co-Chair of ECC24 and Digital Futures Director, introduced the program and industry match-making opportunities, including daily lunch sessions with panel discussions.

The first plenary speaker, Michael Jordan, Professor at UC Berkeley, focused on “Uncertainty, Asymmetry of Information, and Statistical Contract Theory.” Jordan is recognized as the “most influential computer scientist” worldwide.

Fifteen workshops on current and future control systems topics were held the day before the opening. In the evening, the City of Stockholm welcomed the participants at the lovely Stockholm City Hall. In the same place, the Noble Price Dinner is held.

ECC24 on 26-28 June features workshops, industry student programs, panel discussions, an industry exhibition, an inspiring expo on female pioneers in automatic control and, of course, exciting plenary lectures with speakers like Michael Jordan, Ambra Sannino, Maryam Kamgarpour, Alessandro Chiuso, Giulia Giordano, Tryphon Georgiou, Gabriela Hug, Claudio de Persis, and Martina Maggio.
Social events include student activities, a dinner boat trip along the coast and a conference dinner at the Vasa Museum and more.

Since 2013, the European Control Conference (ECC) has been held annually under the European Control Association (EUCA). The conference aims to unite academic and industrial professionals in systems and control, promoting scientific cooperation and exchanges within the EU and globally.
ECC24 is the 22nd EUCA European Control Conference, held in Stockholm, Sweden, from June 25 to 28, 2024. It is hosted by KTH Royal Institute of Technology and co-sponsored by Digital Futures, with technical co-sponsorship from IFAC and the IEEE Control Systems Society (CSS).
