Calvin Tsay

SEC scholar August- September 2024

Calvin Tsay is currently a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in the Department of Computing at Imperial College London. He is supported by the BASF/RAEng Senior Research Fellowship in Scale-Bridging Modelling and Optimisation. He was previously an EPSRC David Clarke Fellow and Imperial College Research Fellow. Calvin received his BS and BA degrees from Rice University (USA) and a PhD in chemical engineering from The University of Texas at Austin. Calvin’s research interests are in the areas of optimisation algorithms, process dynamics/control, optimisation for machine learning, and process systems engineering.

This visit aims to explore complementary research topics at the intersection of machine learning and mathematical optimisation, especially mixed-integer programming. Calvin plans to engage with his colleagues at Digital Futures, including the host, Dr Jan Kronqvist, to develop novel algorithmic ideas and applications that combine machine learning tools’ scalability and generalisability with mathematical optimisation’s rigour. A key goal is to create long-term synergistic research directions between the optimisation groups at Imperial and KTH.
