Scholar in residence March-May 2022
John S. Baras, Professor at the University of Maryland. is an international authority in systems and control, and a remarkably unique cross-disciplinary researcher and educator. Baras has made significant contributions to diverse research fields such as systems and control, communication and computing systems, machine learning and artificial intelligence, network security and trust, healthcare management systems, and human behaviour and decision making.
He is a fellow of IEEE (Life), SIAM, AAAS, NAI, IFAC, AMS, AIAA, Member of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI), a Foreign Member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA), and has received numerous awards for his research. But perhaps most importantly, Prof. Baras is a long-term collaborator of several KTH faculty and has helped to initiate and deepen several cross-disciplinary research collaborations in the past. He has also proven a genuine interest in sharing his knowledge, not only through joint research and publications, but also in terms of co-advising of students and postdocs, and in giving lectures and delivering PhD courses on emerging and engaging topics.
Baras has an inspiring plan for his scholar-in-residence, including cross-disciplinary research efforts related to many of the core areas of Digital Futures, and will offer a short course on Mathematical Foundations of ML, DL, RL and AI, and a number of focused research seminars.
